A Nod to Tony Micelli and a Kitchen Makeover Under 100 Bucks!

Check Out The Cabinets In The Background
Passing Notes Today:  Mrs. Kelly

Dear Girls,

When we bought our house we had to compromise on some of the aesthetics.  The kitchen was really not my style.  It was the style, however, of Mona from Who's The Boss.  I saw a re-run of that show recently and thought, "Holy Formica! I have the same kitchen as Mona Robinson."

That would be cool and all if it was 1985.  But it's not.  And for a long time I cringed every time I looked at those cabinets.

We're not in a position to do a major kitchen makeover at this time.  Some day I can't wait for crisp white cabinets and subway tile!  In the meantime, I needed a way to make those babies a little less of an eyesore.  I googled "painting Formica" and came up with some suggestions but they all sounded really involved.

Then one day I was painting our living room and noticed how similar the color was to the Formica cabinets.  I thought, "What if we just paint out the oak strips?"  So we did it.  And it made a HUGE difference.  Then we went to Target and bought hardware in bulk.  It was pretty reasonable.  I was a little wary of drilling through the Formica.  But honestly, I REALLY did not like those cabinets; if it didn't work, I figured it wouldn't be any worse than it was.  It all went through beautifully.  At the end of the day, we spent under 100 bucks and really improved the look of our kitchen. Sorry Mona.

Here's a side shot.  We also tore down our lovely wallpaper too but that's a post for another day.

Does anyone else have cabinets like me and Mona?

Mrs. Williams Comment:  Wow, Mrs. Kelly.  I guess you showed those cabinets "Who's the Boss?"

Haha, Mrs. Williams' comment just made me laugh out loud. The cabinets looks great - what a difference! It's amazing what small changes can do to drastically improve the look of something (that's what I tell myself when I put on my make-up each morning, anyway). But I am trying to figure out what that little pint-size appliance is next to the stove. What it that? A trash compactor? A mini-dishwasher? Do tell.

That there would be a trash compactor. Gorgeous right?
