Home Depot Kids Workshop

Passing Notes Today:  Mrs. Williams

Hi Mrs. G. and Mrs. K.,

You may not know what you’ll be doing on the first Saturday of each month for the rest of your children’s lives, but I do. My family and I have a standing appointment with Home Depot and something wonderful that they like to call Kids Workshop.

I know you’ve never been, so let me fill you in on all of its wonderfulness. First of all, it’s free. No, not in the free-gift-from-the-makeup-counter-after-you-spend-$14-on-a-tube-of-mascara kind of way, but in the old fashioned, take-it-buy-nothing-it’s-all-yours kind of way. When you walk into Home Depot the smell of free hits you in the face. It’s salty and buttery and so delicious … yup, free popcorn (my favorite part). In fact, I have trouble helping my kids with the workshop part of all of this because I am ALWAYS stuffing my face with popcorn.

Then, towards the back of the store, the Kids Workshop is all set up. Kids get their very own apron and a nicely packaged project to build. When I took these pictures (as the other parents wondered why I was documenting every moment of the project), our kids built a bird feeder. The directions are super clear, but I’ve been known to mess it up. I lose focus (MUST EAT MORE POPCORN). In truth, I always sort of feel for the son that gets stuck with me as their helper instead of their dad.

The tables are plywood on pallets. The seats are Home Depot buckets. The room is noisy and busy. The entire process is pure family fun.

There’s almost always painting involved.

Then, just when you think it can’t get any better, the boys get a pin to document their workshop build and add to their apron.

And on this Saturday … they even got birdseed. I know, awesome!

So Gosling and Kelly, why don’t you meet me at Home Depot this weekend? Just look for the unshowered girl stuffing her face with free popcorn and some super happy kids hammering away.

See you Saturday,

Note from Mrs. Gosling:  It was 1.5 years ago that Mrs. W opened my eyes to the free HD workshop ...... our lives have never been the same :)
