Curb Appeal

Passing Notes Today:  Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Craig

Meet my friend Mrs. Craig (Tammy).  She works in the fashion industry but her appreciation for things of beauty spills over to the garden.

Here is Mrs. Craig and her main man when they first moved into their house (built in 1926).  They live in a sweet neighborhood by Highland Park.  The houses there are oozing with charm.  But, some of those beauties could use a little TLC.

Mrs. Craig decided her exterior landscaping needed a pick me up. Houses are kind of like people; they grow in phases.  Once the overgrown shrubs were removed, the garden started to look more like this:

Looking better, right? Well, after a bit more effort, here's what it looks like now:

Sooo much better!

I asked Mrs. Craig a few questions about her lawn makeover.

Did you work with a landscaper?
No, I have a friend who loves to garden and he eventually got sick of hearing my whine about how ugly my yard was, so he offered to help tackle it.

How did you pick the plants? Based on sun/shade?  Look?
Basically, I let him have free reign but I had some requirements so we worked with those in mind. We needed to be really cost conscious because I'll be selling the house soon, and I wanted to incorporate hydrangeas and hostas (we already had these in our yard). We discussed adding some hardscape, bringing in some additional pops of color, adding a tree to anchor the space, and keeping it relatively low maintenance.

Did you save money in any way?
Yes, because it was a DIY project and we already had some of the plants.

Is it low / high maintenance?
VERY low maintenance:) We planted just a few annuals that have to get replaced every year, maybe touch up the mulch, and do a bit of weeding here/there- which, I actually enjoy now!

Anything you wished you did differently?
I wish I had done it as soon as we moved in:) It's the first thing you see, so it sets the tone for the rest of the house.

Mrs. Craig's next project is this little patch behind the house.  Here is the before and middle shot:

I can't wait to see the final result!

Thanks for sharing.  I love it so mulch.

Note from Mrs. Williams:  Thanks for stopping by Mrs. Craig.  Any chance you can stop by and do a little work on our front landscaping?  It could totally use your skills!

Thanks ladies!

Mrs. Williams, if by skills you mean nag-my-talented-friends-until-I-wear-them-down, then yes, I'd be happy to stop by and work a little magic;)
